One of the more tedious and overlooked areas of development is Search Engine Optimization...not sure why because the everyday person on average is using google 3-4 times a day and even moreso while on the job. As developers many times as we chart our course we plan for every part of the project but SEO. MAny times I beleive in our heart of hearts we thinks its something that will just take care of itself. Truth is...it won't..you can build your site with mor of the automated tools like WIX and WordPress and although each do a really good job assisting with the overall process having a couple levels deep understanding can certainly help. I can recall back in the early 2000's there was alot of the keyword stuffing in the Meta tags as well as within the sites content. Much of this works minimally...forums were a big players and then on to blogs. One thing I can say is that content is still KING. Having that is updated on a somewhat regiular basis but also interacted with also seems to help. This why blogs and forums are a big deal...you can have both relevant content which is updated and interacted with regularly. Another important factor is how often these areas are visited not only directly to your site but arrving to the key areas from the search engines. It seemed that paying to play with respect to SEO and SEM helped a site really move up the list super fast but the ads at the top of the page help more less for getting noticed. For myself...I rarely click on the ads...I usually scan the page for the main site listings...mainly because I believe these sites have done the real work to get to the spot their occupying at that time and deserve a look. I'll stop rambling and let you take a look at this list....as I am sure you'll find a few tools to assist in the overall development of your web presence!

I'd like to give a shout out to Brian Dean over at Backlinko for the awesome article content below as he certainly has done his research on tools to really help in the SEO process.

Yes

The Google Keyword Planner is the only keyword tool that gives you data straight from the horse’s mouth.

Cool feature: The GKP tells you how likely someone searching for that keyword will buy something from you. How? Look at the “competition” and “top of page bid” columns. If the “competition” and “estimated bid” are high, you probably have a keyword that converts well. I put more weight on this than straight-up search volume. After all, who wants a bunch of tire kickers coming to their site?

SECockpit is probably most advanced keyword research tool on the market. Yes, you enter a seed keyword and get suggestions like any other tool. But SECockpit can do so much more than list out a list of related keywords.

It can spit out low competition keywords. It can show you keywords that get a minimum CPC in Adwords. It can even show you keywords that have YouTube, Ebay or Amazon results on the first page.

Cool Feature: SECockpit scrapes the “Searches similar to…” from the bottom of Google’s search results. This can often unearth keywords that you’d otherwise miss.

Seed Keywords
Keyword Research

Yes

Let’s face it:

Most people enter seed keywords into the Google Keyword Planner that they pluck out of thin air. But with this free SEO tool you can find out what people actually type into search boxes.

How? Just create a scenario and ask people what they would search for in that situation.

For example, I created a scenario “How would you search for a hotel in Paris?”. You can see the results in the screenshot below. You can even export the list as a CSV file.

Want to get links from news sites like the New York Times and WSJ? The first step is to find the right journalist to reach out to. And JustReachOut makes this process MUCH easier than doing it manually. Just search for a keyword and the tool will generate a list of journalists that cover that topic. You can also pitch journalists from within the platform.

Cool Feature: Search for broken link-building opportunities via a keyword search. So instead of manually scanning individual pages for broken links, this feature will bubble up niche-relevant link opportunities for you.
