Tips For Working Whenever You Want, But Not Stressing Your Colleagues Out While Doing It by Cassie Petrey

If you're like me, sometimes you just want to work because you really love what you do. You enjoy it so much, that it doesn't matter if it's "normal working hours" or it's not. In fact, one of my favorite times to work is when nobody else is working. That's when I feel like I really get to do the fun part of my job - uninterrupted with calls, texts, incoming emails, and scheduled meetings. It's just me getting great stuff done.

Needless to say, I absolutely live for a great Saturday morning work session. I come up with great ideas, and get my inbox completely cleaned up. However, there's one problem with this. It's Saturday morning, and a lot people are not working at this time and don't want to be. However, if they see other people working, they feel pressure to respond to that text or e-mail that you just sent. Even if you truly didn't expect a response until next week, people will often feel pressure to respond immediately.

You don't want your fun Saturday morning work sessions to create stress, so here are a few tips for doing your thing without creating pressure for others to respond at that very moment.

1) Schedule Emails

It's totally fine to write e-mails over the weekend. However, unless there's a sense of urgency, use a scheduling tool to send them first thing Monday morning in the time zone of wherever the recipient is based. Gmail has this tool baked into their system now, and it's super easy to use. You can work freely, make sure you don't forget to send anything, and know that it's going to arrive at a time when people are actually expected to be answering e-mails.

2) Send An Email Instead Of A Text

Everyday, more and more of our communication happens via text rather than in our email inboxes. Sometimes a text is easier and feels more personal. You also don't have to deal with those pesky subject lines. However, people feel more pressure to respond to texts immediately than they do with e-mail. If you can, make your outside of office hours communications an e-mail rather than a text. It may be a bit more work for you, but it's definitely better for creating better working relationships with your colleagues. Bonus points if you schedule it rather than sending it at that moment!

3) Make The Follow Up Phone Call Tomorrow

If you're hitting 6:00pm, instead of making that phone call to follow up on something, just write down to do it tomorrow (unless it's urgent, of course). Nobody likes to be chased for something that's not urgent at the end of the day. Sometimes people make these phone calls because they fear they're going to forget to do it otherwise. My suggestion to you is to write it down on your to do list for tomorrow, or to schedule an email to send to yourself to remind you to do it the next time everyone is in the office.

4) Be Clear About When You Need A Response

Sometimes, our colleagues assume that everything you ask for is needed immediately. When I know somebody is really busy, I like to call out that "tomorrow is ok for responding to this." It gives people clarity and the opportunity to prioritize their "to-do list" correctly. If you ever see an opportunity to alleviate pressure like this (especially if you are somebody's supervisor), do it. It will make your team work with a clearer direction.

More than ever, we're able to work at anytime. However, there's a lot of pressure that comes with around the clock business communication. Let's all do what we can to create digital working environments that are less stressful for the people we communicate with. It will lead to less anxiety, overall better job performance, and the better work/life balance that we all so desperately need. Especially right now, when there's no different between work and home for a lot of us.
